The Appalachian Leadership Institute is a comprehensive regional leadership training program developed by the Appalachian Regional Commission in partnership with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; The Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs; Tuskegee University; and Collective Impact. Launched in 2019, the Appalachian Leadership Institute is limited to 40 Fellows annually, which are chosen via a competitive application process. Every state in the Appalachian region will be represented in each cohort, reflecting the region’s diverse economic developmental challenges, opportunities, and strategies.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville
Founded in 1794, the University of Tennessee is one of the oldest public universities in Appalachia, big on tradition and Volunteer spirit. As the preeminent research-based land-grant university in the state, UT embodies the spirit of excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, outreach, and engagement attained by the nation’s finest public research institutions. UT co-manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory through its UT-Battelle partnership; enrolls about 50,000 students statewide; produces about 10,000 new graduates every year; and represents more than 400,000 alumni around the world.
Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs
The Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs is located on the campus of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. The Baker School’s mission is to build better leaders and it is committed to a vision of thoughtful leadership, engaged citizens, and sound policy.
Tuskegee University
Located in Tuskegee, Alabama, Tuskegee University is a private, state-related and nationally ranked land-grant institution that serves a racially, ethnically and religiously diverse student body of 3,000-plus students. The institution was founded in 1881 by Booker T. Washington and is one of the nation’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges since 1933, Tuskegee’s academic programs — many accredited by their respective accrediting bodies — currently lead to 41 bachelor’s, 16 master’s and five doctoral degree opportunities.

Since January 2001, Collective Impact has provided capacity building services to help organizations and communities achieve their mission, realize their vision, and thrive. This professional services firm works with a broad range of clients in the nonprofit and government sectors from a variety of disciplines in numerous states, throughout the Appalachian region, and nationally.
