The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) are bringing together state regulators responsible for dam safety and removal, and economic development professionals for a workshop to discuss best practices from Pennsylvania’s nation-leading dam removal programs and to share ideas across participating states for how to remove outdated structures and the potential economic benefits of doing so. Now is a key time, with the significant increase in federal funding for dam removal and river restoration and economic development in the recently passed Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This workshop is intended to help states and communities across Appalachia seize the current opportunities for federal funding to benefit communities with aging and obsolete dams.
