(County Rates)
A poverty rate is the ratio of the persons below the poverty level to the total number of persons for whom poverty status has been determined. The map uses natural breaks in the distribution to organize the data into groups of common values. Appalachian poverty rates range from 5.6% to 48.3%. The Appalachian average is 14.0%. The U.S. average is 12.4%. For a list of county data by state, see the downloadable Excel file.
