This report examines worker displacement throughout the Appalachian Region, an issue last examined by ARC in 2005. Using data from the past five iterations of the Displaced Worker Supplement (DWS), which cover the years 2011-2021, the report examines how worker displacement varies based on a number of factors, including worker characteristics (i.e., age and education), industry of employment, and geography. In addition to examining the causes of displacement, the report also sheds light on the experiences of displaced workers, such as the reductions in earnings and periods of unemployment that typically follow displacement. The report also introduces additional data sources and estimation methods to provide a more nuanced understanding of displacement throughout the region.
